chic details

I definitely have a closet full of “basics.” Versatile pieces are super important for me because I’m a “no fuss” get-up-an-go type of girl. That’s why I love items that work as an essential wardrobe piece, but still have a little something extra to them. A plain black cotton dress with side cutouts, or a pair of loafer pumps with a pop of gold on the heel. It doesn’t matter what basic essential I’m looking for, if it has chic details, it’s status is automatically elevated! In this post I want to share with you where I shop to find these fun staple pieces!

Staple Wardrobe Items

A few pieces that come to mind when I think of staples are:

  1. A nice pair of jeans
  2. A classic LBD
  3. Comfortable and chic pumps
  4. Cute flats
  5. A camel coat

These five pieces are the basic of the basic pieces every woman should own. Good jeans can be dressed up or down, and a LBD works for date night, an office meeting, or even meeting the in-laws. A pair of black patent leather and comfy pumps are a MUST as well, and for those casual days, a cute pair of flats are perfect. Lastly, a camel coat is essential because it’s always in style, and camel is flattering on almost any skin tone.

Add the Chic Details

I’d really encourage everyone to take a look at their lifestyle and determine a list of 10 items they would consider a staple. Then, check out your closet! What are you missing? Use this as your guide before you shop. Lets say you make your list and you come up with 5 items – a long sleeve top, a nice skirt, tights, comfortable shoes for the office, and a great weekend bag. You don’t want to purchase a plain version of every item because you don’t want your outfit to be boring. Now is when you start sniffing out those staple pieces with chic details.

chic details

Long Sleeve Top – first, determine the color you’re looking for. Neutrals are always great for those staple pieces, so think white, black, grey, beige, etc. Then think about your style. Are you girly, edgy, minimalist? Use your specific style when thinking of the details. I love this long sleeve scalloped trim top from Zara because it’s a comfortable basic, but the trim adds some detail.

Skirt – this is a great staple piece because if you find the right one, you can wear it to work, on the weekends, out on dates, or even brunch with the girls. The possibilities are endless! I love this asymmetrical plaid wrap skirt for all those events. Plaid is super on trend and also classic, so it’s great for work. You can also pair fun colored tops for date nights, or a chunky sweater for brunch. The asymmetric hem and wrap belt breaks up the plaid and adds some interest.

Tights – can’t get much more basic than this! I love the look of a sheer black tight because it can break up the heaviness of a look. I buy all my tights from Target because they’re inexpensive and good quality. And here’s a fun tip – to add some chic details to your look, layer a pair of patterned or fish net tights over your sheer black tights!

Comfortable Shoes for Work – a must for every woman. Depending on your job your shoe needs could vary, but in my opinion everyone still needs a pair of classic black shoes for events, or even job interviews. I’m not much of a stiletto girl, but I still like a little added height. That’s why I opted for these loafer style heels from DSW. I love the pointed toe, and the chunky heel makes them extremely comfortable. For the added details, I’m OBSESSED with the gold on the heel! It’s oh so simple, but oh so chic as well 🙂

Fun Weekend Bag – this is the biggest variable as every woman’s style is different. When I think of a fun weekend bag, I think of what I’m likely to be doing. Going to the Farmer’s Market, exploring the city, shooting looks for the blog… With that in mind, it makes sense for my weekend bag to be big enough to hold my necessities, easy to carry, and of course, trendy. A small backpack purse is a great alternative option to the classic tote, especially right now. It’s super on trend and very easy to carry. This backpack from Target is great because it’s a lovely neutral color, but the gold clasp is so chic. It also fits all my goodies!
